After her mother's death, young Mary Yellan goes to Cornwall to find her only remaining family: her aunt Patience and her husband Joss. The latter is the landlord of the Jamaica Inn, a place with a sordid reputation, a haunt for local brigands. On the evening of her arrival, Mary saves the life of one of the criminals, Jem Trehearne, accused of having stolen a share of their last loot. Both manage to escape from the inn and find refuge with the eccentric Judge Pengallan. But they don't know that he is actually the leader of the bandits, in charge of all the looting operations...
