Johnnie Gray has two loves in his life: The General, the steam locomotive he engineers, and Annabelle Lee. When he meets Annabelle for a date, the American Civil War breaks out before they even share their first kiss. Johnnie then follows Annabelle's advice and tries to enlist in the army, without success. When Northern spies steal The General, Johnnie embarks on a mad chase to retrieve his locomotive, unaware that Annabelle has been taken prisoner inside it.
